FirstService Residential, a leading property management company in Illinois, is working with Neighborhood Housing Service of Chicago (NHS) to complete housing renovations for veterans and their families in Humboldt Park.  On Friday, May 16, more than 40 FirstService Residential employees will volunteer their time to landscape and paint homes in preparation for move-ins by recipients of ChildServ’s Military and Veteran Family Program.

“Our associates told us they want to be even more involved with community initiatives, and because we’ve made significant financial contributions to NHS over the past few years, we wanted to continue supporting the organization’s efforts to help underserved Illinois children and families,” said Asa Sherwood, president of FirstService Residential Illinois.

Through its strong industry relationships, FirstService Residential also secured donations for all materials and supplies needed to complete the renovations. Landscaping contractor Clarence Davids is donating sod, grass seed, fertilizer, plants and trees, Sherwin-Williams is providing all paint and paint supplies and Kinsella Landscaping, through its partner Christy Webber Garden Center, is donating top soil.

Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago has been involved with the City of Chicago’s Humboldt Park Micro Market Recovery Program (MMRP) for the last three years. During that time, NHS has successfully saved 67 West Humboldt Park homeowners from foreclosure, secured $108,000 in savings in insurance and property tax exemptions for 31 homeowners, impacted 35 homes with $3.5 million in loans, and reclaimed seven vacant properties for homeowner-occupants.

“Being genuinely helpful, doing what’s right and improving it are among our company’s core values, and we are honored to have the opportunity to assist those who have given so much to our country,” said Sherwood.  “We’re proud that our associates want to get their hands dirty to help, and grateful that our partners immediately stepped up when we asked them to donate supplies. It’s a testament that our people not only build great relationships, but also work hard to make a difference, every day, in our local community.”
